Wisconsin Rapids Public Schools recently updated their Student Acceptable Use policies. These updates include the renaming of the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) to Responsible Use Policy (RUP), as well as updating outdated language. The most significant change to these policies is how the District is having students and parents acknowledge, accept and sign these policies. Prior to 2019, students and parents accepted and signed the AUP at each of the students' transition to a new building. As an example, the AUP would get signed once in elementary school, once in middle school and once in high school.
Starting in the Fall of 2019 parents and students will sign separate documents. Parents will accept and electronically sign the WRPS Parent RUP and App Consent Form. This form will be signed annually during the Online Verification Process that happens in August of each school year.
Students in grades 4K-12 will review and accept the WRPS Responsible Use Policy each school year. The RUP was designed to be grade level specific and become more specific and detailed as students progress through their school years. The RUP along with the grade level specific forms will be reviewed with students in the first week of school by either their classroom or homeroom teacher, library media specialists, or building principals.
The intent of these changes is to bring more awareness of digital citizenship and technology usage to the forefront of our students minds. Technology is a powerful tool giving students' access to loads of information. Unfortunately, technology can also be used inappropriately, causing harm and damage to people and their well-being.
