ADDITIONAL CLASSES OFFERED AT LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL

SPECIAL EDUCATION

Special Education assists students in acquiring new skills and learning coping or compensation mechanisms for those they lack. A focus is placed on teaching to specific individual needs and supporting the regular classroom curriculum in an effort to assist each student in achieving his or her potential.
In order to enroll in courses offered through the Special Education Department, a student must be referred to a team of educators which will determine eligibility for placement.

The Special Education department offers opportunities for assistance in the area of social/emotional behavior and academics. The Behavior Intervention Center (BIC) helps students manage volatile situations and emotions in a safe, instructional environment. The Learning Resource Center (LRC) provides a quiet study area with study strategy skills and tutorial assistance.

CD (COGNITIVE DISABILITIES)
Functional level courses in English, Science, Health, Mathematics and Social Studies are taught on a rotating semester basis. All courses are interrelated and deal with “Persisting Life Need” themes including: Communications, Understanding One’s Life, Health/Safety, Use of Leisure Time, Responsible Citizenship, Earning a Living, Managing Money, Homemaking, Appreciate and Enjoy Fine Arts and Environment.

ED (EMOTIONAL DISABILITIES)
The primary focus of courses offered through the ED program is to provide direct instruction on topics dealing with self-concept and social skills. In addition, functional level language arts is offered as it relates to career/vocational development. In all ED classes, students will be expected to participate in community experience activities.

LD (LEARNING DISABILITIES)
Courses offered through learning disabilities programs provide the learner with skills necessary to function both in mainstream classes and in independent living. The course offerings include English, Math, and Science. Permission from the instructor is required.

ENGLISH  10 - No. 079X
1 Credit - Grade 10

This English course is designed for sophomore students who need course modifications to achieve success. Students will be developing their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and vocabulary skills. Units of study will include poetry, short stories, novels, mythology, word processing, computer research applications, components of literature, and real life language art applications.

ENGLISH  12 - No. 079S
1 Credit - Grade 12

This full year English course is designed for senior students with LD needs in the area of language arts who are working to strengthen their basic language skills in the areas of reading, vocabulary development, writing, listening, and oral communication. Students will read plays, short stories, and novels, use  word   processing, and apply  language  arts skills to real   life  situations.
ENGLISH  11 - No. 079J
1 Credit - Grade 11

This full year course is designed to provide basic skills in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking to junior students with LD needs. Students can expect to study novels, short stories, nonfiction, creative and expositional writing, and oral communication techniques. They may also expect to improve their word processing and real life language art skills.

READING  FOR  LIFE  - No. 180B
1 Credit Elective - Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite - The teachers of  this class select students based on course selection criteria.
This year-long intensive reading intervention program is designed to meet the needs of students who are reading significantly below grade level. Student individual needs are addressed through adaptive instructional software, high-interest fiction and non-fiction, and direct instruction in reading and writing skills. Students can sign up for No. 180A (1 Credit) or 180A 180B (2 Credits). Not NCAA approved.


Human  Relations - No. 040

Prerequisite -
Consent of Special Education Instructor.
Human Relations offers students instruction in Errors In Thinking, Anger Management, adolescent issues, and social skills.
FUNCTIONAL   ACADEMICS  - No. 022

This course is designed for students with special education needs who require additional instruction for language arts, mathematics and communications. The students will develop academic skills related to independent living.

MATH  FOR  CONSUMERS 1 - No. 082
1 Credit - Grades 10, 11, 12

This course is designed to give students practice in application of math skills in everyday situations. Topics will include review and application of decimals, fractions, percents, functional geometry,  banking, taxes, and consumer purchasing.

MATH FOR CONSUMERS 2 - No. 083
1 Credit - Grades 10, 11, 12

This course builds upon principles learned in Math For Consumers 1. An emphasis is placed on how math skills are used in real life situations. Career related activities are an integral part of the simulation used to represent situations students may encounter after high school which require them to use their math skills. Additional topics that are covered include: budgeting, savings and checking accounts, investing, car shopping, insurance, taxes, and many other skills students need to develop to live on their own.

FUNDAMENTALS  OF  MATHEMATICS - No. 085
1 Credit - Grades 10, 11, 12

This mathematics course is designed for students with special education needs, who need course modifications to achieve success.  Topics are likely to include decimal, fraction, and integer operations; equations including exponents and symbolic manipulations; and graphs of linear equations.  The students will apply these concepts and skills to solve many different types of problems and make connections to geometry.

Adaptive  Physical  Education  - No. 899
1 Credit - Grades 10, 11, 12
This is a physical education course for students with special needs.

This course is a hands-on approach to science that stresses the scientific method.  The course will focus on biology and chemistry, as well as the human body.

This mathematics course is designed for students with special education needs who require course modifications to achieve success. Students will learn math skills needed for independent living. Units will include functional math, banking skills, purchasing habits, and budgeting.
Semester 2, units will focus on applying the skills from  Semester 1 into the community.

This course is designed for students with special education needs who require course modifications to achieve success. Incorporating English and Social Studies concepts, the students will learn verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal relationships, on site work skills, and develop a strong work ethic at various work sites within the community.

Science / health  - No. 018SI

Prerequisite -
Consent of Special Education Instructor
This course is designed for students with special education needs who require additional credit in science or health. This course will emphasize science or health concepts in relation to the students daily living situations.

WORK EXPERIENCE EDUCATION
1/2 or 1 Credit Elective - Grades 10, 11, 12
Work experience and good work references are praised by employers and improve your chances of getting  and keeping a  job. Work Experience Education is an excellent way to develop both. The programs within Work Experience Education provide the opportunity to explore careers, to develop and enhance work skills, habits, and attitudes, and to develop a work reference.

Prerequisite - Referral from the student's E.E.N case manager.  Students MUST have consent from the Work Experience instructor before participation in this program.


WORK  STUDY:
A semester class of one class period per day. The student remains in a work site at Lincoln High School.
Student must be flexible in job placement and willing to follow directions of immediate supervisor. Must have consent of  Work Study instructor. No. 033, 034 Grade 10, 11, 12

WORK  EXPERIENCE:
A semester class of two consecutive class periods per day. Required coursework to be completed during Monday scheduled class periods. Tuesday through Friday the student leaves campus and works in the community.
Must have consent of work experience instructor.
