Physical Education and Health


Through physical education students develop movement skills, experience lifetime physical activities, and develop social interaction skills. Students will gain a greater appreciation for the value of fitness activities and how these activities positively impact daily living experiences.

The program emphasizes heart and lung fitness, flexibility, strength, and endurance of students. Students are expected to dress in the appropriate uniform for the activity and actively participate in all daily activities.

ADVANCED STANDING COURSES (MARKED*)


PHYSICAL  EDUCATION  II - No. 880
1/2 Credit Required - Grades 10, 11, 12
The student will develop an understanding of the rules and
skills involved in team sports. The sports which promote personal and social relationships include flag football, soccer, softball,  doubles pickleball, raiderball, basketball, volleyball, indoor speedball, bukaball, swimming, track and field, and strength training.  Students will create activity logs and incorporate heart rate analysis with unit activities.

PHYSICAL  EDUCATION  III - No. 882
1/2 Credit Required - Grades 11, 12
Prerequisite - Physical Education II
(May be taken a second time as an elective.)
The student will develop an understanding of the skills and strategies involved in a choice of dual and individual activities. The dual and individual activities offered within the curriculum to enhance the student’s self-concept and personal well-being are: tennis, archery, weight training, golf, cross country skiing, swimming, relaxation and badminton. These will be enhanced with several team sports and mini-units in self defense, bowling, rollerskating, etc. A $15.00 activity fee is required.

STRENGTH  CONDITIONING  AND  FITNESS - No. 884
1/2 Credit Elective - Grades 11, 12
(May be taken a second time with instructor approval and successful completion of P.E. III.) Out-of-class time required.
Students will be given the opportunity to design their own individualized strength programs using weight room activities. Students will also take part in cardiovascular activities, plyometric and "fitness" related activities for heart and lung development on alternate days.

Aerobics  and  Conditioning - No. 886
1/2 Credit Elective - Grades 11, 12
Prerequisite - Physical Education I, II, III
Students will be given the opportunity to improve their cardiovascular endurance plus shape and tone their bodies through aerobic activities, such as, tae bo, step, hip-hop, cardio Salsa, Yoga, Pilates, and more.  Students will also take part in a 4-5 week triathlon training that includes swimming, biking, and running and concludes with a triathlon competition.

SPORTS  CHALLENGE - No. 888
1/2 Credit Elective - Grade 12
Prerequisite - Physical Education I, II, III
Sports Challenge includes skill development in various activities and an in-depth study of several team games. A variety of highly competitive tournaments and contests will take place in various units. A study of the individual game strategies of each game will be examined including a look at the principles and history of the games. Officiating skills will be explored.

OUTDOOR  EDUCATION - No. 890
1/2 Credit Elective - Grade 12
Prerequisite - Physical Education I, II, III
This course will emphasize group cooperation and improved physical, mental and emotional conditioning through the exploration of outdoor activity. Such activities will include snowshoeing, orienteering, broomball, snorkeling, cross-country skiing, rock climbing and rappelling, biking, and canoeing. Students should have a proficient level of fitness. There is a $20.00 lab fee to cover materials used during the semester.

LIFE   RESPONDERS - No. 892
1/2 Credit Elective - Grade 12
Prerequisite - Advanced swimming ability, written consent of the instructor, and Physical Education I, II, III
This course is designed to teach and certify students in first aid, professional rescuer CPR, lifeguard training and WSI. Students who successfully complete this course will be certified as lifeguards and swimming lesson instructors. There is a $100.00 lab fee to cover certification and materials.

HEALTH   EDUCATION - No. 895 (Required)
1/2 Credit Required - Grades 10, 11, 12
Note: A health course must be taken during grades 9-12.
This course is a comprehensive health education curriculum. It is designed to provide students with knowledge and skills that will have a positive, long term affect upon their health and the health of others, as well as consequences of behaviors that occur during adolescent years. The class is structured around physical, mental, emotional, and social tasks that students need to resolve in order to develop to their full health potential.

Prerequisite - Passing grade in the required 9-12 health course.
An advanced health course focusing on health careers, current health topics, and problems related to young adults in today's society.  An emphasis will be placed on student focused activities and health related occupations that allow for greater student discovery of health issues.
