Lincoln High School offers a wide variety of courses in all areas of music. Performance courses in band, choir and orchestra maintain active performance schedules and are recognized throughout the state for their excellence. There are also non-performance music courses open to all students with an interest in music theory, history and technology.

CONCERT BAND - No. 656
1 Credit Elective - Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite - Previous experience on a band instrument or director’s recommendation.
The Concert Band offers students an opportunity to learn and improve on their musical abilities, so as to understand and enjoy music as a fine art. Students in this group may take part in solo/ensemble contests as well as other smaller ensembles such as jazz and pep bands. In addition, the Concert Band will share some of the limited marching responsibilities that take place during football season. This group may split into two bands during concert season if numbers warrant. Individualized lessons are required each quarter.
Concerts outside of the school day are an integral part of the curriculum and as such, attendance is required.

WIND ENSEMBLE - No. 653
1 Credit Elective - Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite - By audition.
This band is made up of students who have progressed to a greater degree of proficiency on their instruments. The main emphasis is on interpretation and performance of fine music literature. Students in this group may also participate in solo/ensemble contests as well as other smaller ensembles such as jazz and pep bands. In addition, the Wind Ensemble will share some of the limited marching responsibilities that take place during the football season. Individualized lessons are required each quarter.

MUSIC TECHNOLOGY - No. 687
1/2 Credit Elective - Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite - Experience on an instrument or voice and an interview with instructor.
This is a course to study the latest technological advances in music education and the music industry. Areas to be covered
include: basic music theory and composition, computer assisted composition, synthesizers and other electronic instruments, digital studio recording, and advanced sound reinforcement. Students will be required to work at several evening concerts during the semester. |
SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA - No. 660
1 Credit Elective - Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite - Instrumental proficiency and director
recommendation.
This ensemble is offered to students of violin, viola, cello, and double bass. The main emphasis of the class is to gain a thorough understanding of string orchestra techniques and literature. The extra curricular groups offered as part of orchestra class are: Chamber Players, a group that performs in the community, and String Choir, a group that performs at solo/ensemble and offers a challenge to advanced students. Two or three lessons per quarter are required. Symphony Orchestra members are chosen from Wind Ensemble personnel. Attendance at concerts is required. |
A CAPPELLA CHOIR - No. 673
1 Credit Elective - Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite - By audition or director’s recommendation.
Membership affords an opportunity for artistic musical expression through all mediums of contemporary and traditional
choral literature. Emphasis is centered on musical understanding, aesthetics discrimination and ability to read and sing with facility. There is ample opportunity for solo/ensemble performance. Regularly scheduled concerts complete the program. Attendance at concerts is required. |
MUSIC HISTORY AND LITERATURE - No. 684
1/2 Credit Elective - Grades 10, 11, 12
This one semester class is designed to give students a better understanding of all musical periods and styles. There will be study of different periods of music and of composers and their musical contributions. There will be a large amount of listening to many musical examples as well as the study of analytical listening skills. This class is open to students that have not taken music since elementary school, as well as those currently enrolled in Lincoln's performance classes. |

BEL CANTO CHORUS - No. 670
1 Credit Elective - Grades 10, 11, 12
This women's chorus offers all female students interested in singing to improve the art of singing through in-class work and private lessons. The class refines their technical skills through a wide variety of choral literature and music reading exercises. Singers also have the opportunity to participate in the solo/ensemble music festival. Attendance at lessons and concerts is required.

AP MUSIC THEORY - No. 683
1/2 Credit Elective - Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite - Interview with instructor
This is a college-prep course for students interested in pursuing a music major or minor or taking the AP Music Theory Exam. Summer preparation includes a firm understanding of major, minor, and modal scales; solfege (sight-singing); the circle of fifths/key signatures; and rhythm. The course will progress rapidly through a review of these fundamentals and on to intervals, chords, principles of harmony, form, ear-training, and sight-singing. In-class vocal performance is required.
