Department Interns, Independent Study, Youth Apprenticeship
DEPARTMENT INTERNSHIPS AND INDEPENDENT STUDY

The programs are available in all departments. These programs are for students who can work on their own, according to a plan, and with a minimum of supervision. These programs provide another way for students to expand upon their learning opportunities. Students must apply the semester before entrance into a department internship or independent study

1/2 or 1 Credit Elective - Grade 12
Requirements -
  
(1) In most departments, students must have an accumulative grade point average of 3.0.
(2) Students must prepare an application for either department internship or independent study.
(3) Student will make arrangements for an interview with the instructor and assistant principal.
(4) The student may earn a maximum of one credit in Department Internship and/or Independent Study combined.
(5) In any given semester, a student may enroll in either Department Internship or Independent Study, but not in both.
(6) Students are taking this in addition to their 6.0 credits.
(7) All necessary paperwork must be completed within the first three weeks of the semester.

DEPARTMENT INTERNSHIPS - No. 961 (1st semester) - No. 962 (2nd semester)
This program gives you an opportunity to work closely with a teacher or students in carrying out classroom objectives. You must be able to follow directions, have a desire to finish all tasks assigned, and have the ability to work alone efficiently. You will be expected to be helpful, patient, and courteous.

Some examples of internships include teaching assistant, area assistant, and laboratory assistant. The job description will vary from department to department and by individual teacher.

INDEPENDENT STUDY - No. 964 (1st semester) - No. 965 (2nd semester)
The student and instructor will identify an area of special interest to the student, and in a written application, identify the nature of the study to be undertaken. Projects may include descriptive or action research, observations and voluntary participation. Credit will be earned according to how well the student accomplishes the level of performance determined in the application. Time, tasks, and final credit will be arranged with the teacher.
 
YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP

YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS - No. 515      1/2 or 1 Credit Elective - Grades 11, 12
  
Some of the most promising careers of the future are in high tech, high skills, hands-on related fields. Youth Apprenticeships are unique new opportunities for Juniors and Seniors to start preparing for a career while still in high school. One and two year programs combine academic education, occupational instruction, and work-based learning with an employer.

Opportunities:
• Regular high school diploma
• Youth Apprenticeship Competency Certificate from the Governor’s Work-Based Learning Board
• Take classes at Mid-State Technical College  (in select occupational areas)
• Earn advanced standing credit at Wisconsin technical colleges
• One to two years of professional training and hands-on experience
• Paid work experience
• High School credit for paid work experience
• Business/Industry mentor

How do you get involved in this program?
Any student may apply for the program. Interested students must apply for this program through their guidance counselor or school-to-work coordinator. Selection is based on career interest, skills, employability, attitude, personality, attendance, number of high school credits, and recommendations.
