Family and Consumer Education can help any student with everything from improving relationships, to developing healthy eating habits, furnishing your home and preparing for living independently. And about the job — we can help you get a head start on that too!

The use of materials varies from class to class. In all classes, a fee may be charged for supplies and field trips as determined by the class and the instructor. In case of extreme hardship, fees for classes may be waived.

INFANT and TODDLER –No. 936
1/2 Credit Elective-Grades 10, 11, 12

Students will discover the rewards, responsibilities and challenges required when caring for infants and toddlers, through classroom discussions, activities and caring of a computerized baby for one weekend. The course will explore infant and toddler theories and development and early childhood opportunities and career choices. Students will spend time at local centers interacting with children. Students will have the option to begin working towards a Department of Public Instruction Early Childhood Education Certification as an assistant child care teacher. Full assistant child care teacher certification is obtained once the Assistant Child Care Teacher course is also completed.
A field trip and lab fee of $10.00 is required.
This course is a prerequisite for Assistant Child Care
 

*ASSISTANT CHILD CARE TEACHER – No. 937
1/2 Credit Elective-Grades 11, 12
Prerequisite: Infant and Toddler

Expand knowledge gained in Infant and Toddler class learning about the development and care of young children. Coursework will also include activities preparing curriculum in which students will facilitate at local child care centers. Students will have the option of continuing and completing their Department of Public Instruction Early Childhood Education Certification, making them able to be hired at a child care center as an assistant child care teacher. Students need to be 17 or 18 to take this course, or turn 17 during the course. This course can be taken for Mid-State Technical College transcripted credits. A field trip fee of $15.00 is required.

RELATIONSHIPS - No. 938
1/2 Credit Elective - Grades 10, 11, 12

Strong and healthy relationships are a vital part of life and successful relationships begin with you! This class will examine real-world issues and concerns facing teens, young adults, and families. A variety of problem solving activities, informal discussions, videos, guest speakers, and creative projects will provide you with a better understanding of the skills and qualities needed for meaningful relationships. You will feel better prepared to make decisions as you face the challenges and stresses of life.

On  your  own - No. 939
1/2 Credit Elective - Grades 11, 12

Are you looking ahead to the future and thinking about your life beyond high school? Success is the key to independence.  Explore your future goals, learn how to buy a car, find credit and insurance.  You'll set a budget, explore local housing, determine roommates, and organize and cook a meal on a dime.  This course will help you handle the transitions into independence.  If you want to be more successful as a young adult, this course is designed for you. A supply and field trip fee of $12.00 is required.
 

Professional Cooking I  (ProStart I) – No. 926
½ Credit Elective – Grades 10,11,12

 
Learn to cook like the Pro’s. Experience aspects of operating and managing a food service establishment in a special "ProStart" program designed by the National Restaurant Association. The classroom comes alive with job-relevant lessons and hands-on-learning and training for employment opportunities. Learn the culinary techniques used by the chefs in: the art of garnishing, short order cookery techniques in breakfast buffet services, creative sandwiches, salad bars and dressings, herbs & spices, safety and sanitation, use of quality equipment and cost controls and in a specially designed professional food service kitchen. Students will create and modify recipies and produce a cooking show series. A $25.00 lab fee is required.


Professional Cooking II (ProStart II)  – No. 928
½ Credit Elective – Grades 11, 12

Prerequisite: Completion of Professional Cooking I with a grade of C or better. (Seniors may take Professional Cooking I concurrently with instructor approval.
 
Take your skills as a chef to the next level. Apply your creative talents in menu development and marketing of a restaurant and the art of service. Culinary skills will focus on preparation of entrée’s including, meat, poultry and seafood, sauces, soups, pasta, potatoes and grains, desserts and baked goods. A $25.00 lab fee is required.


Professional Cooking Work Experience – No. 920
½ Credit Elective per Semester – Grades 11, 12
 
Prerequisite:
Completion of Professional Cooking I with a grade of C or better. Students must be enrolled in Professional Cooking II. (Seniors may take Professional Cooking I & II concurrently with instructor approval.)

Capitalize on the skills obtained in Professional Cooking I and II and put what you have learned to work in an approved work site. The Food & Hospitality Industry is one of the largest employers in the state of Wisconsin – Be Part of It.  More than eight out of ten salaried employees at restaurants started out as hourly employees. Opportunities are unlimited. A “Skill Certificate” may be earned for students who have completed all requirements in Pro Start. Acceptance into the program in based on instructor’s approval.
*Scholarship opportunities are available for students continuing in a related field of study.
*FCCLA extends leadership and career development skills beyond the classroom.

SEWING FOR TODAY - No. 912
1/2 Credit Elective - Grades 10, 11, 12

 

Open up a whole new world of individual creativity by learning to sew. Learn sewing and design techniques used in the sewing industry. Sew clothes, accessories, quilts, pillows and many other useful items for yourself and others. Students are expected to pay for fabric and sewing supplies for at least three projects. A lab fee of $10.00 is required.

FASHION AND DESIGN - No. 914
1/2 Credit Elecive - Grades 10,11,12

Learn fashion terms and enter the world of fashion design. Achieve a professional look while continuing to develop your sewing skills. Fashion and design principles will be used to personalize and develop creative projects. Sewing is a life skill that provides personal satisfaction, creativity and career options. Students are expected to pay for fabrics, sewing supplies and a $5.00 lab fee.

Interior Design - No. 930
1/2 Credit Elective - Grades 10, 11, 12

Creatively design your future home to reflect your style of living, examine housing options, draw your own floor plans, and create a furnished room. Investigate careers in housing and interioer design. Learn to be creative while making decorations and accessories to enhance your home. Students are expected to pay for accessory/decorating supplies. A supply and field trip fee of $10.00 is required.

BAKING AND TECHNOLOGY - No. 941
1/2 Credit Elective - Grades 10, 11, 12

 

Trace the origins of baking from the past to the present. Investigate the history of pastry and baking arts. Apply the use of technology and tools used to create cookies, quick bread, pies, sourdough breads, yeast breads and rolls, calzones, pizza, focaccias, candy making, cakes and specialty desserts. Learn the skills of the trade to bake with a creative touch and how to market a quality product in a simulated bakeshop. A fee of $15.00 is required.

CULTURAL CUISINE - No. 942
1/2 Credit Elective - Grades 10, 11, 12

 

Be creative and entertain with an international flare. Travel the United States as you prepare foods that are part of our American heritage. Investigate, prepare and experience the foods that represent the many regions of the world and their cultural influences. Labs will include regional American and ethnic foods. Field trips to specialty restaurants and demonstrations will enhance the classroom activities. Lab and field trip fee of $15.00 is required.

FOOD & Fitness - No. 924
1/2 Credit Elective - Grades 10, 11, 12

 

Apply the basic skills in food preparation and meal planning that emphasizes the Dietary Guidelines, the Food Pyramid, and making healthy life-style choices. Labs will emphasize creative food preparation techniques in breakfast, luncheon, and dinner menus by making soups, salads, breads, desserts, pasta entrees, easy meals, and managing your food spending. A fee of $15.00 is required.
