ENGLISH   LANGUAGE   LEARNERS

English Language Learners  (ELL) courses assist students in acquiring English skills so they are prepared for mainstream classes and for life after high school.  Teaching focuses on meeting individual needs and increasing the knowledge both in the content and in English.  The goal of the ELL program is to help each student reach his or her highest potential. 

To enroll in ELL courses, a teacher or guidance counselor must refer a student, or a request must be made by a parent or guardian.


Concentrated  English - Reading  I - No. 277
1 Credit Elective - Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite - Consent of ELL Instructor
This course emphasizes skills and strategies to strengthen reading comprehension, language, and vocabulary development.  Students will read and analyze a variety of genres as well as develope skills to access and interpret information from reference materials.

Concentrated  English - Reading  II - No. 278
1 Credit Elective-Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite - Consent of ELL Instructor

This course is NOT OFFERED during the 2010-2011 school year.
This course will continue to emphasize language development through direct instruction of reading comprehension skills, vocabulary expansion activities, and the use of reference resources.  Students will engage in critical thinking through exploration and evaluation of various media sources.

Concentrated English - Reading III - No. 276
1 Credit Elective - Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite
- Consent of ELL instructor
This course is NOT OFFERED during the 2010-2011 school year. This course will emphasize English acquisition through direct instruction of reading strategies and vocabulary. Students will develop the skills needed to read and understand a variety of texts and resources as well as participate in literature discussions. They will also learn techniques and strategies to better understand new vocabulary.

Concentrated  English -writing  I - No. 277A
1 Credit Elective-Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite - Consent of ELL Instructor
This course will offer instruction in basic English skills and assist students in accelerating to the level of other classmates.  The course involves the study of various models of writing and the writing process.  To communicate effectively, students will use a variety of writing styles appropriate for different audiences, purposes, and settings.
CONCENTRATED ENGLISH - WRITING II - No. 278A
1 Credit Elective-Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite-
Consent of ELL Instructor
This course is NOT OFFERED during the 2010-2011 school.
This course will build upon students' English skills and continue to assist students in accelerating to the level of other classmates. Students will continue to expand their language and composition skills through exposure to various styles of writing and use the writing process to communicate effectively in English.
CONCENTRATED ENGLISH - WRITING III - No. 276A
1 Credit Elective - Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite-
Consent of ELL instructor
This course is NOT OFFERED during the 2010-2011 school year.
This course will focus on communicating effectively in English through the writing process. Student will improve writing skills and language proficiency through exposure to various styles of writing, writing for a variety of audiences and purposes, and in a variety of formats.

INTERMEDIATE  ENGLISH  II/III - No. 274 A
1 Credit Elective-Grades 10,11,12
Prerequisite -
Consent of ELL Instructor
This English course parallels curriculum taught in the mainstream, with modifications to help students achieve success.  Students will analyze novels, compose and edit essays, and present to their peers. This course will develop the reading, writing and speaking skills needed to communicate effectively.

STUDY   LAB - No. 280
0 Credits  - Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite -
Consent of ELL Instructor
This course is intended to give students assistance with homework in all subjects.  Students are expected to bring work every day.  A teacher and instructional aides will be available to read and explain content to students.  Tests may also be taken and read orally to students though this course.  Students will also have multiple learning resources available to them through this course, including books on tape and graphing calculators.

HEALTH - No. 296
1/2 Credit Elective-Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite - Consent of ELL Instructor
This health course parallels curriculum taught in the mainstream, with modifications to help students achieve success.  Students will be developing academic reading and writing skills, while expanding their vocabulary.  This course is intended for students who have difficulties with academic
reading.

Prerequisite - Consent of ELL Instructor
These courses are NOT OFFERED during the 2010-2011 school year.
This science course parallels curriculum taught in the mainstream, with modifications to help students achieve success. Students will be developing academic reading and writing skills, while expanding their vocabulary and critical thinking skills. This course is meant to be an introduction to the sciences and will enable students to learn technical vocabulary and lab skills.

SOCIAL   STUDIES - World  History No.  294
SOCIAL   STUDIES - American  History No. 293
1 Credit Elective-Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite - Consent of ELL Instructor
These courses are NOT OFFERED during the 2010-2011 school year.
This social studies course parallels curriculum taught in the mainstream, with modifications to help students achieve success.  Students will be developing academic reading and writing skills, while expanding their vocabulary and critical thinking skills. This course alternates between American Studies curriculum and World Issues curriculum.  This course is intended to assist students with difficulties in academic reading.
