The 17th Annual Volunteer Recognition Breakfast honored the hard work of Hilary Bauer (LHS) with the Youth Individual Volunteer of the Year award and the East Ambassadors with the Youth Group Volunteers of the Year award.

Hilary Bauer of LHS, was selected as Youth Individual Outstanding Volunteer of the Year at the 17th Annual Volunteer Recognition Breakfast.  Hilary has volunteered over 350 hours throughout her high-school career at numerous organizations making her a prime candidate for this award.  Hilary helped create (with fellow nominee Karli Klement) the Share Your Stories program where over 1,000 books, movies and computer games were collected and distributed to underprivileged children at Christmas. Her other projects, centered around teaching and mentoring children, include: teaching basketball clinics, helping with religious education as an aide and participating in hospital tours as Winnie the Pooh.

The East Ambassadors are a service learning group at East Junior High School.  Students apply and interview during the 4th quarter of their 8th grade year, and fulfill their requirements through their freshman year.  Generally, 15-20 students make up the East Ambassador group.  Their goal is to help create a positive, friendly and caring environment at East.  They accomplish these goals in many different ways.  One of them is by doing “random acts of kindness” throughout the school year, focusing on staff, students and the community.  Another is by educating students on drug and alcohol awareness issues.  A third way is providing support to new students through the orientation program in the fall, and giving tours to new students who transfer in during the school year.  A final component is the Peer Mediation program that the East Ambassadors are trained in, providing peer support for issues involving conflict.
